The Store & Outings

The stares pass. What your child learns stays.

Before · During · After

  1. 1

    Before (set the ground)

Leave fed and rested. Agree at the door: "Today we're buying what's on the list. You get to pick the fruit." Give them a job: hold the list, put the bread in the cart.

  2. 2

    During (drop the anchor)

Asked for candy? Use the five steps: "You wanted the candy. Today it's no. The candy stays here. I'm here." If the crying grows, move to a quieter corner and wait together. The stares pass; what your child learns stays.

  3. 3

    After (hold the tide)

"You got upset and you calmed yourself down." Don't buy the candy on the way out as a reward for the crying.
