Lesson 4

Lesson 4 · The Anchor Method

Hold the Tide

It gets a little harder before it gets better. Hold steady.

6 min

The mistake that makes most moms give up isn't the wrong method. It's switching methods in week two.

A new habit takes weeks to settle, for your child and for you. Think of winning the kingdom little by little, one small flag at a time: one situation at a time, not the whole house at once.

Share your fixed no's from Lesson 3.

  2. 2

    Same words

Agree on the same phrases and the same consequences.

  3. 3

    One rule

Whoever said the "no" holds the "no." The other adult doesn't undo it in front of the child.

  4. 4

    Disagree later

If you disagree, talk about it later, away from your child.

Hi! I'm doing a program about tantrums and I'd really love your help. The idea is that we say the same "no," the same way, so they stop testing who gives in. Can I show you the 5 rules I picked? It takes 10 minutes. And if we disagree on something, let's talk about it later, away from them.

That's the message above: copy it and send it to your partner, grandparent or sitter. Then track the tide once a week in the Tide Tracker.

This week's task

Have the 10-minute talk with whoever cares for your child with you. Log week 1 in the Tide Tracker.

One-screen summary

  • Getting harder before better is normal.
  • Weeks, not days.
  • Every adult, the same "no."
