In the 5 seconds after "no"
Breathe
One slow breath, letting the air out through your mouth, before you speak. Your child copies your rhythm, not your words.
Bend down
Get to their eye level, about an arm's length away. Low voice, calm face.
Name it
One short sentence about what they feel: "You wanted the candy. You're mad."
Repeat
The same "no," in the same words as always, just once: "The candy stays here."
Stay
Stay close, quietly, and say only: "I'm here." Don't explain again, don't negotiate, don't give in.
Fewer words, more calm.
Be the anchor, not the storm.
